| Abstract | The present investigation was carried out at Agricultural Research Station Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India during kharif 2000, on 81 genotypes of rice using 9 x 9 Simple Lattice Design (SLD) to study the genetic parameters like genetic diversity, coefficients of variation, heritability, genetic advance, character association and direct, and indirect effects of independent variables on yield in relation to thirteen characters Viz., plant height, productive tillers per plant, panicle length, filled grains perpanicle,daysto50percentflowering,daystomaturity,1000 grain weight, total dry matter, L/B ratio, harvest index, gelatinlsation temperature, volumeexpansionand grainyield per plant. The analysis of variance showed significant differences among81 genotypesstudied forall 10quantitativecharactersand 3 qualitative characters. A wide range of phenotypic variability was observedforall13charactersstudied. Plant height, days to 50 per cent flowering and days to maturity can be improved through simple selection due to predominance of additive gene action in controlling these characterswithleastinfluencebyenvironment. Filledgrains, perpanicleandtotalbiomassarecontrolledby both additive and non-additive gene action. Hence, moderate gains could onlybeexpectedinthese traitswhile, for the restof thecharacters, thereislittleornoscopeforimprovement. Total biomass had the major direct contribution on grain yield with positive indirect contribution through plant height, productive tiller per plant, panicle length, filled grains per panicle, days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity and harvest index and it was followed by harvest index, number of filled grainsperpanicle, paniclelengthandproductive tillersper plantinthedescendingorder. Based on the inter and intra cluster distances among the groups, suggestions were made to attempt crosses after confirming good general combining ability between cluster 1 (6 genotypes) and cluster 19 (NLR 9672), cluster 16 (NLR 34069—2) and cluster 19 (NLR 9672), cluster 9 (3 gnotypes) and cluster 19 (NLR 9672) to create more variability for qualitative characters like gelatinisation temperatureand volumeexpansionin addition to the grain yield as the inter cluster distances were wide apart between these clusters and to exploit heterosis in F1 as well as transgressioninthesegregatingpopulation. |
