| Abstract | A pot culture experiment was conducted at Agricultural College, Bapatla to study the effect of boron on the nutrient uptake, plant growth, fruit yield and quality of tomato (Var: Arkavikas) grown in sandy soils. Boron was applied as soil, foliar and soil+foliar in 10 treatments with 7 replications. Highest marketable fruit yield (521.9 g/pot) maximun1 plant heights, dryweights of shoots and roots, ascorbic acid content, (30.33 mg/lOOg) T 8.8. (4.0%) reducing sugar content (3.112%) non reducing sugar content (2.304%) and total sugar content (5.539%) was recorded in the treatment with 30 kg Borax ha"1 + 0.30 mg L"1 of B as soil + foliar application. Highest uptake of macro and micronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe) except B was recorded in 30 kg Borax ha'l + 0.30 mg L—1 of B as soil + foliar application whereas high B—uptake was 1 recorded in 45 kg Borax ha‘ + 0.45 mg L‘1 as soil + foliar combination. Boron when applied to soil in graded doses, the 30 kg of Borax ha"1 recorded maximum plant height, marketable fruit yield and quality characteristics like T.S.S., reducing and non—reducing sugar contents and ascorbic acid content) Whereas, 45 kg of Borax ha"l recorded less plant height, marketable fruit yield and quality characters indicating the toxicity effect of boron at this level. Among foliar application treatments of boron, in all the treatments viz , 0.15 mg, 0.30 mg and 0.45 mg L“1 boron showed a positive and significant effect on all quality and quantity characters of tomato. From the above study it is observed that the application of boron to soil and foliar (30 kg borax ha"l + 0.3 mg B L'l) is the best and only soil application is better @ 30 kg B ha'l than foliar application gggï¬ . Boron applications as soil + foliar above 30 kg borax ha‘1 + 0.30 mg B L"1 and soil application above 30 kg borax ha“1 showed toxic effects. |
