| Abstract | The present investigation was undertaken at Agricultural college Farm, Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh during kharif1998, to study the genetic divergence, correlations and path analysis in 20 genotypes of soybean for the following characters viz., days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, number pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight, seed yield per plant, harvest index, protein content and oil content. The results of Mahalanobis’s D2 analysis revealed that the 20 genotypes of soybean have considerable variability and were grouped into six clusters. The pattern of distribution of genotypes from different regions into various clusters was at random, indicating that geographical separation may not be the only factor causing genetic diversity. Protein content, seed yield per plant, number of seeds per pod, days to 50 per cent flowering, oil content and 100 seed weight were considered to be the important characters contributing towards genetic divergence in soybean. Baseduponthedivergencestudies, crossesmaybemadebetween the genotypes of cluster ll \,.i2:., MACS-450, JS-BO-2‘i,_ Punjab-1, Bragg and Cluster Vl viz., JS-90-41, followed by cluster IV vlz., JS-90-29, JS-90-91, DSC-t, l--ilmso~1a‘4, MACS-473 and cluster Vi viz., JS 90-41, to obtain new recombinants in soybean. Correlation studies indicated that seed yield was significantly and positively correlated with plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, 100 seed weight, harvest index and protein content. The results of path coefficient analysis further suggested that selection could be practicalfor the characters like number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, .100 seed weight, harvest Index and protein content as these characters exhibited both direct effects and positive correlation with seed yield. |
