| Abstract | An attempt was made to assess the possibilities of utilisation of hydroponics maize fodder to achieve maximum efficiency of feed utilisation in Rathi calves. A feeding trial of 30 days followed by metabolism trial of 7 days was undertaken on 20 Rathi calves (6-12 month of age) divided in five groups of four calves each in a CRB design using the basal roughage with various levels of hydroponics maize fodder to assess the nutrient utilisation efficiency. Rumen and haemato-biochemical parameters were also studied to ascertain the effect of feeding of hydroponics maize fodder on rumen fermentation pattern and physiological status of health of experimental animals. In the study, highly significant (P<0.01) effect of feeding of hydroponics maize fodder was observed on dry matter intake, average daily gain, digestibility of DM, OM, CP, CF, NFE and ADF, nitrogen balance (g/d), %DCP, %TDN, NR, DOMI, DCPI,TDNI (in terms of g/d, kg/100 kg b.wt, g/kgW0.75). Whereas, DDMI in terms of g/d was found to be significant (P<0.05). The effect of feeding of hydroponics maize fodder on organic matter intake, digestibility of EE, NDF and hemicellulose, DDMI in terms of kg/100 kg b.wt, g/kgW0.75 and nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus intake, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus balance and various haemato-biochemical parameters were found to be non significant. Studies on rumen parameters revealed highly significant (P<0.01) effect of period on pH, TVFA, total protozoal count, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, TCA-precipitable nitrogen and non protein nitrogen. Feeding of hydroponics maize fodder significantly (P<0.01) improved the rumen fermentation resulting in increased TVFA, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, TCA-precipitable nitrogen and non protein nitrogen. Whereas, the effect of hydroponics fodder on pH and total protozoal count observed to be non significant. Looking to the results of present investigation, it could be concluded that hydroponics maize fodder has beneficial effect on nutrient utilization efficiency in Rathi calves and it can replace 75% crude protein of concentrate mixtue. |
