| Description | High rise buildings have become one of the impressive reflections of today's civilization. The increase in land values and higher density of population in Metropolitan areas has forced designers towards the skyscrapers. For low to medium rise structures, the analysis and design with respect to lateral forces has generally been a process of checking the vertical load resisting system for its ability to resist lateral forces. However, for tall buildings the vertical load resisting system may not have the capacity to resist lateral forces, so in reinforced concrete tall buildings, the lateral loads are commonly resisted by specially provided shear walls. For 15-30 storeys building shear wall-frame system was found to be the most acceptable one. The present study has been divided into two parts. In the first part of the study, two computer programs were made using stiffness matrix approach. One is based on the procedure given by F.R. Khan in his paper "Interaction of Shear Walls and Frames" and other is based on the procedure given by B.M. Thadani in his paper "Analysis of Shear Wall Structures". A comparison has also been made between these methods. In Modified Stiffness method, effect of shear deformation in link beam and axial deformation in beam column and shear wall is also taken in to account. A 15 storey building has been analyzed for static lateral loads and it has been found that in Modified Stiffness method, the deflections, moments and shear forces in the members are on higher side as compared to Khan's method. This is due to the fact that in the Modified Stiffness method, the frames without shear wall are not considered to resist any lateral load. In the second part of the study effect of various parameters like the axial deformations of columns and shear walls, shear wall to column stiffness ratio, curtailment of shear wall in upper storeys etc. have been investigated. |
