| Abstract | Room Temperature Ionic liquids (RTILs) are solvents of the future. Optical properties of imidazolium ionic liquids [bmim][PF₆], [bmim][BF₄] , [hmim][BF₄], which mostly absorb in the UV region and posses very interesting fluorescence behaviour have been noted. The fluorescence peak positions of room temperature ionic liquids are found to be very strongly dependent on the excitation wavelength. The anomalous fluorescence behaviour of these imidazolium based ILs is due to the presence of imidazolium ions which are in several energetically different aggregated forms in the liquid state. An excitation and emission wavelength dependent non-exponential fluorescence decay behaviour of these RTILs have also been reported. Temperature dependent viscosities these ionic liquids have been studied and detailed in this report. |
