| Abstract | Kalman filter is normally used to enhance speech quality in a noisy environment, in which the speech signals are usually modelled as autoregressive (AR) process, and represented in the state-space domain. It is a known fact that to identify the changing AR coefficients in every time state requires extensive computation. In this paper, the authors develop a bidirectional Kalman filter and apply it in a speech processing system. The proposed filter uses a system dynamics model that utilises the past and the future measurements to form an estimate of the system's current time state. It provides efficient recursive means to estimate the state of a process that minimises the mean of the squared error. Compared to the conventional Kalman filter, the proposed filter reduces the computation time in two ways: (i) by avoiding the computation of AR parameters in each time state, and (ii) by reducing the dimension of the matrices involved in the difference equations and the measurement equations into constant (1 × 1) matrices. The speech recognition result shows that the developed speech recognition system becomes more robust after the proposed filtering process, and the proposed filter's low computational expense makes it applicable in the practical hidden Markov model-based speech recognition system. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
