| Abstract | Summary form only given. Anisotropic diffusion (AD) has been employed as an effective approach for image filtering. A great deal of work has been dedicated to the improvements of this technique. However, these efforts still left some difficulties unsolved. The first one is to estimate accurately image gradients in noisy images for nonlinear diffusion implementation; the second one is to design adaptively a setting of the gradient threshold in the diffusion coefficient. In order to overcome these limitations, a nonlinear AD algorithm is presented. In a first step, a time-dependent local Gaussian scale selection based on minimal description length criterion (MDL) is developed, smoothing an image by convolving appropriately with the locally optimal Gaussian scale chosen to better recognize the image contour gradients. An adaptive strategy based on morphology is then built for the setting of gradient threshold according to local noise characteristics. Using the relationship between robust statistics and AD, we established the new version of the diffusion coefficient based on the above improvements. The proposed method not only effectively removes Gaussian noise and impulsive noise caused by sensors, but also preferably preserves important detailed edges and image quality. Experimental results are given to show that the proposed method has superiority capability over the previous AD schemes on visual judgment and quality statistical analysis. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
