Abstract	The research on microgrid is primarily motivated to provide the energy need of the rural areas and/or the areas in which the utility power is not available. But due to the globalization of the world's economies, the rural communities in the world are moving towards urban communities. This paper aims to study the formation of microgrid in an urban environment. Buildings are one of the major consumers of the electrical energy. The paper studies the formation of a microgrid at a community level in an urban environment. The primary application areas of such infrastructure can be large scale residential buildings, financial districts and industrial zones. The formation of a microgrid utilizing the existing infrastructure and sharing the resources with each other's and collectively reducing the overall burden on the utility is a major benefit. A combination of existing infrastructure, communication technologies coupled with recent advances together can form a microgrid without additional investment on the resources. This poses a challenge on integrating multiple systems with different controller and communication protocols while honoring cyber security practices across the buildings. The novelty of the paper is that the smart grids/microgrid can be engineered with the existing controllers and existing technologies.
