| Abstract | In this paper, we experiment with use of a formal framework for developing secure Web services (WSs) from components. The framework focuses on separating security requirements from the functional ones. For each component, the approach makes use of two complementary models: one is state-based, described in Z, and the other is event-based, expressed in Hoare's communicating sequential processes (CSP) process algebra. The former is particularly useful to capture persistent data and model "back-end" operations whereas the latter is particularly useful to model behaviour, and in particular, "front-end" interactions and communications. The whole system can then be seen in Z as a combination of the constituent components. In CSP the software architecture of the whole system could be viewed as a parallel composition of appropriate customization of the behaviour of relevant components. The CSP descriptions can be implemented as Web services using current technologies such as Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and Microsoft's .NET framework. We illustrate this approach with a case study for a conference management system. With this approach, it is possible to specify the core functionalities of a system independently from the security mechanisms. National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
