NDLI: RFID Components, Applications and Alternatives in Healthcare Settings

Abstract	Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a wireless technology that utilises radio waves to automatically capture data for identifying and tracking objects and/or people. RFID itself is not new but enhancements in technology have made RFID very important in a number of areas such as, resource optimisation, increasing efficiency within business processes, providing enhanced customer care, making better overall business operations and improving healthcare. RFID is very promising for the healthcare industry. However, RFID contexts of use, solutions and applications vary from one situation to another. Designing RFID solutions and applications in a healthcare scenario is a very difficult task, due to the complex organizational setting of a hospital combined with the sensitivity of human involvement. Moreover, assessment of potential benefit from RFID applications in healthcare can be complex. This study is part of our large research project in UK hospitals. One particular objective of this research is to explore RFID in connection with healthcare and analyse the RFID applications for healthcare settings
