| Abstract | The ISDN concept emerged more than ten years ago under the influence of the significant progress in digital technology in both processing and communication. Such progress justified the pervasive deployment of digital equipment in all sectors of com mon carrier networks. transmission facilities, transit switching, local switching down to, and including, the customer loop. As far as ISDN is concerned, an early decision in favour of its introduc tion in Italy was already taken in the early 80's resulting in active participation to the standardization activity within both CEPTand CCTIT. Later on the ISDN feasibility was one of the key issues demonstrated at the 1984 ISS in Florence with a number of field trials involving national manufacturers. Since then several obstacles have been challenging a timely network evolution towards ISDN. Among the major ones it seems appropriate to mention the following ones- a very large amount of ISDN specifications to be established world-wide via inter national (CCITI) and regional (TI, CETM bodies, the tech nology economics of the customer loop digitalization and the application economics including tariff policies, marketing strate gies for ISDN applications and network implementation. Way, although the actual dates of deployment have slipped of about two years in most countries, including Italy, the ISDN concept has gained substantial credibility in Europe, North America and Japan within the users, manufacturers and network operators conuminifies. After describing the strategy for introduction of ISDN in Italy in the framework of the 'Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of an European ISDN service. by 1992"this paper will focus on the network planning issues and cost analysis criteria which will support the strategy for the large scale intro duction of ISDN in Italy. Such a project, together with the integration of Intelligent Network capabilities into the telephone network is presently one of the major strategic objectives for the evolution of the Italian telecommunication network towards im proved service and quality standards. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
Ministry of Education, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has sponsored and funded the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) project.
