Abstract	Telecommunications operating companies will place increasing emphasis on fast deployment of new services in the multi service environment of the 1990s. Switch vendors will have a major opportunity to meet the evolving operating company requirements by evolving their architectures into more flexible, multiservice platforms. This paper describes the key switching system architecture characteristics required to achieve the desired degree offlexibility. Nodal resource management is introduced as a new area of switch-resident OAM (Operations, Administration, and Maintenance) functionality which will assist the operating company in managing the increased architectural flexibility. A brief system description of SIDMS SuperNode is provided to illustrate the implementation of these architectural principles and nodal resource management capabilities. Finally, some thoughts on the evolution of the switch engineering process are presented to complement the material on switching system architecture evolution.
