| Abstract | Local image descriptors computed in areas around salient points in images are essential for many algorithms in computer vision. Recent work suggests using as many salient points as possible. While sophisticated classifiers have been proposed to cope with the resulting large number of descriptors, processing this large amount of data is computationally costly. In this paper, computational methods are proposed to compute salient points designed to allow a reduction in the number of salient points while maintaining state of the art performance in image retrieval and object recognition applications. To obtain a more sparse description, a color salient point and scale determination framework is proposed operating on color spaces that have useful perceptual and saliency properties. This allows for the necessary discriminative points to be located, allowing a significant reduction in the number of salient points and obtaining an invariant (repeatability) and discriminative (distinctiveness) image description. Experimental results on large image datasets show that the proposed method obtains state of the art results with the number of salient points reduced by half. This reduction in the number of points allows subsequent operations, such as feature extraction and clustering, to run more efficiently. It is shown that the method provides less ambiguous features, a more compact description of visual data, and therefore a faster classification of visual data. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
