| Abstract | In this paper, we present a VQ-based fast face recognition algorithm using an optimized codebook. Previously, Chen et al. [2006] proposed a novel codebook design method based on the systematic classification and organization of code patterns abstracted from facial images for reliable face recognition. In this paper, an improved codebook design method is proposed. Combined by a systematically organized codebook based on the classification of code patterns and another codebook created by Kohonenpsilas Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), an optimized codebook consisted of 2times2 codevectors for facial images is generated. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm using publicly available AT&T database containing variations in lighting, posing, and expressions. Compared with the algorithms employing original codebook or SOM codebook separately, experimental results show face recognition using the optimized codebook is more efficient. The highest average recognition rate of 98.2% is obtained for 40 personspsila 400 images of AT&T database. A table look-up (TLU) method is also proposed for the speed up of the recognition processing in this paper. By applying this method in the quantization step, the total recognition processing time achieves only 28 msec, enabling real-time face recognition. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
