Abstract	This paper covers Intelligent Planning applied to a search and surveillance UUV. Intelligent Planning encompasses the high-level functions of Intelligent Control. These functions include mission and route planning. A related topic also covered under Intelligent Planning is human factors, specifically man-machine interface. Some existing concepts and many new concepts were utilized to implement the Intelligent Planning function. Attention was given to real-time implementation throughout the development process. Many problems peculiar to the search and surveillance mission were encountered and new or modified designs were implemented. The tradeoffs which influenced the decisions are described herein. The work completed to date includes an Intelligent Planning function that operates within a map system and a vehicle. A graphic human interface facilitates operator entry and allows quick examination of mission progress. The required intelligent behavior has been demonstrated on this simulator.
