| Abstract | We report on the preparation of lithium niobate thin films on (01.2) and (0001) sapphire and LaAlO/sub 3/ (01.2) single crystalline substrates using off-axis laser deposition. X-ray diffraction in Bragg-Brentano geometry and in a microdiffractometer with an area detector were used to characterize the crystallography, the texture and the lateral homogeneity of the films. We examined the film morphology with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For the preparation of thin films, the deposition temperature, the deposition pressure and the oxygen-Ar ratio of background pressure were varied. The films grow textured and oriented on the substrates used. For thin films on LaAlO/sub 3/ substrates we found only (01.2) reflections of film and substrate in the Bragg-Brentano diffractometer with its selective reflection recording. This suggests that the films are oriented grown and consist of a single LiNbO/sub 3/ phase. Investigations with the microdiffractometer showed that there is also an amount of a LiNb/sub 3/O/sub 8/ textured phase in the films. Thin films deposited on sapphire substrates consist of different mixtures of the LiNbO/sub 3/ phase and the LiNb/sub 3/O/sub 8/ phase depending on the oxygen-Ar ratio of ambient atmosphere. At an oxygen-Ar ratio of 1:4, the films consist mainly of oriented LiNbO/sub 3/. The dielectric polarization and domain structure of the films were investigated by electric scanning force microscopy. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
