| Abstract | Matched filters based on empirical wake-signature models were applied to SIR-B SAR (Shuttle Imaging Radar-B synthetic-aperture radar) images and produced peak SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) values of 17-21 dB, demonstrating that wake signatures can be successfully exploited for ship detection. A battery ( approximately 100) of filters can determine the ship direction to within several degrees. Empirical wake signature models were also tested in a wake orientation algorithm that calculates the angular cross-correlation between the power spectrum of the model and that of a SAR image. The algorithm correctly determines wake angles (with 180 degrees ambiguity) with SNR values comparable to the matched filter. Data from a land-based, X-band, coherent real-aperture radar (which overlooks the ocean) were processed to obtain ocean surface Doppler velocities as a function of range and time. Line-of-sight orbital currents of ocean waves are easily detected, and the power in the velocity-field spectrum is concentrated on the dispersion curve for free-surface gravity waves. Cuts taken along this curve produce quantitative wave spectra for the study of ocean surface features and ship-induced wake modifications of the surface. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
