NDLI: The battle for head-mounted displays [panel discussion]

Abstract	Head-mounted displays (HMDs) have been around since Ivan Sutherland created his Sword of Damocles system in 1968. Since that time, drastic improvements have improved the experience of using HMDs for virtual and augmented reality. This panel of experts will debate the tradeoffs such as field of view, resolution, tracking precision and accuracy, comfort, ease of use, and cost. Topics to be discussed include: Current challenges with HMDs; Cue conflicts and how to minimize those conflicts; Latency and what is currently achievable; User dependent calibration; How HMD hardware by itself is only part of the problem¿integration with software and tracking hardware is essential; The major differences between HMDs for virtual reality and augmented reality. The panel will begin with each speaker providing short (5 minutes or less) position statements of what they believe are the most important aspects of head-¿mounted displays and current challenges. Panelists will speak in detail about their area of expertise rather than to provide general thoughts that other panelists and audience likely already agree on. The moderator will then start a discussion, followed by questions from the audience.
