| Abstract | Multilevel converters topologies present important benefits when they are used on medium and high power applications. However, it is necessary to design new alternating methods to control easily the internal dynamics of the converter. This paper presents a new voltage balancing strategy for a flying capacitor multilevel converter in conjunction with a space vector modulation technique. The advantages of this strategy with respect to others control methods are, the equilibrated use of the switches in the converter, the independence from the modulation method and the easy implementation. The proposed strategy is based on the redundancy of switching states and it is designed to accomplish three objectives: a) ensure the demanded voltage level by the pulse width modulation strategy, b) balance the capacitor voltages, and c) ensure the equilibrated use of the converter switches. The performance of the proposed technique is validated by simulation and experimental results in a 5-level inverter. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
