NDLI: Chicago circulator turns to "Smart" Technology

Abstract	Chicago is planning to build a Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) System known as the Central Area Circulator. The eight-mile line will operate in mixed street traffic in the dense downtown area crowded with pedestrians, automobiles, and buses. To bring the CAC to reality their conflicting requirements must be satisfied. The Circulator Design Team turned to "Smart" Technology to control both the Light Rail Vehicles and the intersections. Two-way communications between LRVs and the intersection controllers will also be utilized to minimize routine delays to the LRVs. The implementation of these control technologies will optimize the utilization of each transportation mode.
