| Abstract | Measurement of energetic electrons produced by focusing the Vulcan petawatt pulse onto the edge of a supersonic gas jet is performed. During the experiment, the laser consistently produced 650 fs duration pulses delivering ~ 180 J on target and generating intensities greater than 3 times $10^{20}$ $Wcm^{-2}.$ Electrons are measured up a maximum energy of greater than 350 MeV, the highest energy observed from any laser-plasma interaction to date. It appears from computational modelling of the interaction that the increase in intensity has moved Vulcan from operating in the plasma wave acceleration regime to one where a form of direct laser acceleration is dominant. In addition, ion acceleration from the interaction of the laser pulse with a underdense plasma is studied using a laser power 1000 times the critical power for relativistic self-focusing to occur. In this new regime, we find a strong correlation between maximum ion energy vs. plasma density which is also confirmed by simulations. This study suggests that high plasma density will lead to more efficient ion acceleration and that electrostatic shocks in the plasma may contribute to the acceleration of these energetic ions |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
