| Abstract | This work reports the highest optical nonlinearity (to the best of the authors knowledge) ever observed. The samples showing this behaviour are unoriented methyl-red doped 5CB cells with thickness of 1-2 /spl mu/. Dynamic gratings are obtained with two cw coherent laser beams (/spl lambda/ = 532 nm) linearly polarised in the same direction, which impinge on the samples at normal incidence (i.e. the bisector of the crossing angle is parallel to the cell normal). The diffraction efficiency /spl eta/ = I/sub +I//I/sub O/ has been evaluated by means of a low power He-Ne probe beam. Diffraction efficiencies of the order of 20-30% are easily reachable with a total incident intensity of a few /spl mu/m/cm/sup 2/. By fitting the experimental data using the expression valid for thin gratings /spl eta/ = |J/sub 1/(/spl xi/)|/sup 2/, values in the range (1250 - 1325) cm/sup 2//W can be obtained for the nonlinear coefficient n/sub 2/. It is worth noting that the small thickness is a stringent condition for observing such an amazing nonlinear response. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
