Abstract	In the Fall of 1990 the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech began its seventh year of requiring that each entering freshman student have a personal computer (PC). The author presents some summary ideas related to this effort. The program continues to be successful and to receive ongoing support from its students and also now from graduates who were required to have a PC. The physical system required has evolved from a single-drive 256 K Monochrome PC to the current 20 M hard-drive, 1 M memory, VGA 286 PC. This growth has included upgrades in hardware and software while keeping the program costs to the families constant at $2000.
