| Abstract | Music retrieval methods are in the focus of recent interest due to the increasing size of music databases as e.g. in the Internet. Among different query methods content-based media retrieval analyzing intrinsic characteristics of the source seems to form the most intuitive access. The key-melody in a song can be regarded as the major characteristic in music and leads to a query by humming or singing. In this paper we turn our attention to both, the features and the algorithm of matching in audio music retrieval. Nowadays approaches propagate the use of dynamic time warping for the matching process. As reference mostly midi-data or humming itself is used. However, first attempts matching humming to polyphonic audio exist. In this contribution we introduce hidden Markov models as an alternative for humming queries matching humming itself, mobile phone ring tones and polyphonic audio. The second object of our research is the introduction of a new way of melody enhancement prior to a latter feature extraction by use of stereophonic information. Further an adaptation throughout the extraction process of the frame length to the tempo of a musical piece helps improving similarity matching performance. The paper addresses the design of a working recognition engine and results achieved with respect to the alluded methods. A test database consisting of polyphonic audio clips, ring tones, and sung user data is described in detail. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
