Abstract	Fields scattered by a sphere near a Hertz dipole are derived using a rigorous analytical method with the Mie scattering approach. However, the incident field on the sphere has not been considered a plane wave, rather these are the fields radiated from the Hertz dipole. A general solution of the fields scattered by the sphere has been sought, when the sphere is present in the near and far field of the Hertz dipole. These scattered fields have been obtained for spheres of two different radii in the near and far field of the Hertz dipole. Finally, it has been shown that when the sphere is in the far field of the Hertz dipole, the scattered electric fields in the theta and phi directions have the same pattern as the radiation patterns of the theta and phi electric fields of the Hertz dipole. When the sphere is closer to the dipole, the pattern of the scattered field components significantly deviate from the radiation pattern of the radial and theta electric fields of the Hertz dipole.
