| Abstract | Summary form only given. As an efficient and powerful X-ray source, wire array Z-pinch is of great interesting for radiation simulation, high energy density physics, and inertial confinement fusions (ICF). Lots of works have been carried out to understand radiation characteristics and dynamic evolutions of the wire array Z pinches. Results indicated that instead of an azimuthally symmetric shell, core-corona plasmas are formed, which would further result in precursor plasmas and the trailing mass, and degrade the implosion performances and radiation outputs. Suppressions of the ablation using a tailored current prepulse has been reported by researchers on Magpie1, here we report our explorations on using a compact pulsed power machine to provide a conveniently adjustable current for suppressing the core-corona structures in single and several wire Zpinches. Firstly, evaluation criterions for suppressions were proposed, including: deposited energy criterion, peak voltage criterion, and current oscillation criterion. Then, thermodynamical calculations were carried out to find the appropriate parameters of the load and the pulsed power facility. The machine were then constructed which could provide a peak load current of ~ 1 kA and a dual pulse width of 10-20 ns and 20-30 ns. A two beam Mach-Zehnder interferometer was built using a 30 ps laser (EKSPLA PL2251C) to measure the electron density distribution. Single wire experiments are carried out with different parameters of the load (wire material, diameter, length) and the facility (charging voltage). Results are reported and the effects of ablation suppression are discussed. |
