| Abstract | A typical sidescan sonar system uses a linear array of rectangular elements in order to generate a fan-like acoustic beam which is narrow (1-5 degrees) in the fore-and-aft directions but is broad (20-30 degrees) athwart. The array functions both as a transmitter and as a receiver. Inherent to such an array is the existence of relatively large sidelobes in its radiation pattern (on the order of 13 dB down from the main lobe maximum). Sidelobes cause deterioration of system performance by admitting signals from undesired directions. It is possible to reduce the sidelobes by using an array of elliptic rings. Fabrication of elliptic arrays from ceramic elements, however, is complicated and expensive. Instead, the authors propose to separate transmitting array from receiving array. The transmitting array can be a conventional ceramic liner array, while the receiving-only elliptic array can be fabricated using piezo-electric films such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The authors employ optimization techniques to optimize the combined receiving/transmitting pattern. As an example it is shown that a 5/spl degspl times/32/spl deg/ fan-like beam with 60 dB sidelobe suppression in the two-way pattern can be obtained using only 15 elliptic rings. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
