| Abstract | The presence of rain can significantly degrade altimeter measurements of range, backscatter coefficient (/spl sigma//sub 0/) and significant wave height (H/sub s/). Atmospheric liquid water can attenuate the pulse by several decibels and distort the waveforms. In this paper, two cycles of Topex-Poseidon altimetry data over the North Atlantic are systematically searched for instances where the data are possibly affected by rain. Different criteria, based on /spl sigma//sub 0/, wind speed, /spl eta//sub s/, sea surface height (SSH), and data quality flags, especially the rain flag, were examined in order to identify the measurements affected by rain. Using the fact that pulse attenuation by rain drops is frequency dependant, criteria are proposed based on finding changes in the relationship between the Ku (13.6 GHz) and the C (5.3 GHz) bands H/sub s/ and /spl sigma//sub 0/. The criteria applied to the /spl sigma//sub 0/ measurement found over 90% of the rain events identified in one cycle, whilst the present Topex rain flag signalled less than 10%. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
