| Abstract | In an open information system, all the information in the system are known by the public. For such a system, the users are responsible for enciphering their own information in a way that they can be accessed by authorized users only. Let U={U/sub 1/...,U/sub n/,) be the set of users in the system. Associated with each U/sub i/ is an authorization list A/sub i//spl sub/U such that U/sub i/ can access the information of U/sub j/ if and only if U/sub i//spl isin/A/sub j/. We propose two simple access control schemes. For the first scheme, for any 1/spl les/i,j,k/spl les/n, (U/sub k//spl isin/A/sub j/ and U/sub j//spl isin/A/sub i/)/spl Gt//spl rArr/U/sub k//spl isin/A/sub i/. In other words, if U/sub k/ can access the information of U/sub j/ and U/sub j/ can access the information of U/sub i/, then U/sub k/ can access the information of U/sub i/. This is called hierarchical accessibility. For the second scheme, there is no constraint on the authorisation lists. To our knowledge, this is the first scheme in the literature that supports arbitrary accessibility. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
