| Abstract | Analyzing, understanding and predicting failure is of paramount importance to achieve effective fault management. While various fault prediction methods have been studied in the past, many of them are not practical for use in real systems. In particular, they fail to address two crucial issues: one is to provide location information (i.e., the components where the failure is expected to occur on) and the other is to provide sufficient lead time (i.e., the time interval preceding the time of failure occurrence). In this paper, we first refine the widely-used metrics for evaluating prediction accuracy by including location as well as lead time. We, then, present a practical failure prediction mechanism for IBM Blue Gene systems. A Genetic Algorithm based method is exploited, which takes into consideration the location and the lead time for failure prediction. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this mechanism by means of real failure logs and job logs collected from the IBM Blue Gene/P system at Argonne National Laboratory. Our experiments show that the presented method can significantly improve fault management (e.g., to reduce service unit loss by up to 52.4%) by incorporating location and lead time information in the prediction. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
