| Abstract | The purpose of this research was to develop a realistic IVUS simulator based on histopathology images as input. Although IVUS is currently the reference method to visualize human coronary plaques, little is known about the capabilities of IVUS with respect to the determination (qualitatively and quantitatively) of the different tissue components as found inside such plaques. This was the main motivation for developing the simulator. The outcome of this work is an IVUS simulator capable of producing highly realistic IVUS images as compared to real IVUS images. It could therefore act as a tool to study the qualitative and quantitative capabilities of IVUS. The IVUS simulator uses histopathology images as input. Different methods used in existing simulators have been studied, such as analytical methods, ray tracing and the finite element method. This research led to the development of a simulator based on a hybrid approach combining analytical methods with ray tracing. This allows the simulation of phenomena such as refraction, which was not being taken into account by other published simulators. Validation of our simulator proved to be a difficult task, although matching histopathology and real IVUS images where available. Comparison of images generated by the simulator compared to real IVUS images was done by experts, who where impressed by the level of detail. A number of analytical phantoms were tested in different analysis tools, yielding results that correlated with expectations. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
