NDLI: Comparison Of Physical And Chemical States Of Two Separator Type Ni-cd Cells From A Satellite Simulation Program

Abstract	The Naval Weapons Support Center Crane (NWSCC) has been conducting a flight simulation test program for navigational satellite batteries. This program has two sets of cells of the rechargeable alkaline nickel-cadmium type, one with old Pellon 2505 separators, the other with the new Pellon 2536. These cells are undergoing a flight simulation schedule which mimics the charge/discharge cycling of the power supply in the satellite. Periodically, one cell of each type is withdrawn from test and subjected to the NASA destructive physical analysis (DPA) procedures (X-711-74-279, Revision A, December 1980). The purpose of the monitoring DPA is to establish possible failure mechanisms and a prospective lifetime for the actual satellite batteries. The overall purpose is to compare analytical data for the two cells with different separator materials. Materials Analysis Section at NWSCC has obtained data from a baseline cell set and a cell set after approximately one year of flight simulation. The presentation will review the data obtained thus far and comment upon the changes observed in the physical and chemical composition of these cells. It will also compare the states of the two cells as a function of the separator types.
