Abstract	Thermosetting resin and cross-linked polyethylene are widely used as electrical insulating materials in many pieces of electrical apparatus and cable. These polymer materials are not ecologically friendly, since they are not suitable for recycling. Biodegradable polymers are attracting our attention as eco-friendly materials for our daily life. However, research on their electrical properties had been very limited at least until we started in April 2003 a joint research project to study the feasibility of using biodegradable polymers in the electrical insulation field through systematic and fundamental research on essential dielectric phenomena. The present work done in this project deals with the dipolar polarization and depolarization currents in poly-L-lactic acid and polyethylene terephthalate succinate.
