| Abstract | Spark conditioning is important for the enhancement of insulation strength in vacuum. In order to enhance the insulation performance of vacuum circuit breakers, we have to clarify the conditioning effect and improve a conditioning procedure. In this paper, we discuss the conditioning process of Cu and stainless steel rod electrodes based on breakdown (BD) probability distribution. We applied a negative impulse voltage to a rod-plane electrode configuration. We adopted two procedures for the voltage application, i.e. up-down and 3 times methods. For the Cu rod with the up-down method, BD voltage increased by the conditioning effect, however, the minimum BD voltage did not increase or even decreased due to the damage by BD. A moderate conditioning procedure, e.g. 3 times method, could increase the minimum BD voltage as well as the stabilization of insulation strength. The Weibull analysis of the development of a BD probability distribution has enabled us to evaluate the damaging effect. Based on these results, we can discuss a suitable conditioning procedure. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
