Abstract	A shaded-pole flat single-sided linear induction motor (LIM) has been tested experimentally. Although the construction of such a motor is very simple, it has been found that the performance characteristics are rather poor in comparison with a three-phase rotary induction motor and a three-phase LIM. The disadvantages of a shaded-pole LIM are a low power factor, a small starting torque, and a low efficiency. This is mainly due to a large airgap and the fact that the phase shift between the main and auxiliary winding is less than 90/spl deg/. Nevertheless, a shaded pole linear motor can be found in applications where a three phase-power supply is not available and a simple and cheap drive is necessary.
