Abstract	The results of the error performance of trellis and convolutionally coded slow frequency-hopped spread spectrum systems are presented, as might be encountered in mobile or cellular applications. The particular hopped modulation is /spl pi//M-shifted, M-ary differential phase shift keying (/spl pi//M-DMPSK) with differential detection and a maximum metric decoding, with M=2, 4, and 8. The channel is subject to flat Rician fading and the faded component may have a Doppler frequency shift due to vehicle motion. A union Chernoff bound on error performance is evaluated for the usual additive white Gaussian noise channel, and in addition with multiple access interference due to other users. A system simulation has been carried out in which the effects of implementation parameters in the decoder have been examined.<>
