| Abstract | Previous research efforts in mimicking the compound eye of Musca domestica, the common house fly, in hardware have primarily been focused on optical designs to achieve the fast, analog, parallel processing, and motion hyperacuity properties of the biological system. While these optical platforms have shown promising results, nearly all proposed advantages of utilizing a fly-inspired sensor have been discovered through the use of software simulation with very little or no effort being made to validate these simulations using the actual fly-inspired optics. The work presented in this paper advances the frontier of compound vision research by mimicking the core processing systems of the fly's intermediate neural layer structure (the lamina) in hardware. The hardware designs were kept as biomimetic as possible, and the unique motion hyperacuity characteristic of Musca's visual system was preserved in each circuit design. It will be shown that an effective light adaptation system can be designed that is both analog and parallel by directly mimicking the fly's visual system. The proof-of-concept designs presented in this paper are an important first step in turning the novel compound optical designs of the past decade into useful sensors that can function in dynamic real-world environments. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
