| Abstract | Magnetic separation can be combined with several environmental technologies and the proper combination helps overcome the limitations of current technologies. One of the most popular adsorbent for environmental uses is activated carbon, especially for water and wastewater treatments. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has several advantages such as relatively short equilibrium time and easy regeneration in a very short period of time due to a short pore depth over granular activated carbon but the separation of PAC out of water is challenging. In the current study, commercially available PAC was magnetized and tested for separation out of water using a superconducting magnet. The magnetization process might block the pores and decrease the sorption capacity. The surface area and the sorption capacity of PAC were compared before and after the magnetization. The removal efficiency of PAC was highly dependent on the magnetic field and magnetizing method. Complete removal of magnetized PAC was achieved by a superconducting magnet indicating a superconducting magnet system with magnetized PAC and can be useful for physical treatment of water and wastewater. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
