| Abstract | A talk concerning the past, present, and future roles of women in NASA is presented. The topic is engaged as an historical account of the struggle of women to escape a life of work in the home and to enter what was a mostly male workforce. The effects of events, such as World War 2 and the Great Depression, on women's roles are discussed. It is noted that the changes that were taking place in society at large were also reflected in places such as Langley Research Center. Women's attempts to gain entrance into all male enclaves such the test pilot and astronaut corps are discussed in light of the fact that women proved themselves to be physically, psychologically, and intellectually more than capable of these pursuits. The talk ends on an upbeat note that is provided by the slow but steady gains that women have made in the upper echelons of NASA. |
