| Abstract | The main Soviet biomedical experiments conducted since the beginning of space flight are reviewed; on the basic of their results, it is concluded that prolonged manned space flight is possible, although certain apparently reversible changes in vital processes have been noted. The experiments are divided into four groups: research on mammals and turtles, on insects and amphibians, on plants, and on microorganisms and tissue cultures. In these experiments, the genetic effect of cosmic ionizing radiation and other factors of space environment, and the effect of weightlessness are stressed. |
