| Description | The author has identified the following significant results. This investigation indicates unexpected great variation in drift velocity of ice in the Fram Strait. During calm weather, the southward directed speed was observed to be 10 cm/s at 81 deg N at the end of April 1976. About a week later during conditions with northerly moderate winds, the speed increased to about 20 cm/s. It was also possible, for the first time, to determine the drift velocity at various positions across the Fram Strait. A predominance of parallelogram-like floes was observed during the early spring, and for the whole period April-July, there seems to be a minimum areal coverage of floes of an average size of about 60 sq km. |
