| Description | Information and data from wind tunnel tests conducted on 0.0175-scale models of the space shuttle orbiter are presented. The primary objective of the tests was to evaluate aerodynamic heating effects of the tiles in the thermal protection system (TPS). Tile gap depth and flow orientation effects on the TPS were investigated. Tile patterns were cut into the undersides of the orbiter models to simulate the gaps. One model was left smooth for comparison. |
