| Description | Banding observed in unidirectional solidification of eutectic alloys is shown to be due to melting back of the freezing interface because of oscillations in the temperature of the furnace. General theoretical criteria as to the amplitude and frequency of the permissible temperature oscillations are given to ensure that banding will not occur. |
