| Description | Several fundamental characteristics of LIT (light ion trough), including evidence of diurnal variation as well as response to magnetic disturbances, are identified. These identifications were made using the Bennett radio frequency ion mass spectrometer onboard the OGO-6 from 1969 to 1970. It was shown that the LIT, rather than the total ionization trough, appears as a more meaningful indicator of the plasmapause. This makes the LIT a fundamental parameter for studies of the formation and maintenance of the plasmasphere. |
