| Abstract | Monitoring dynamicprocesses in complex cellular environments requiresthe integration of uniformly distributed detectors within such three-dimensional(3D) networks, to an extent that the sensor could provide real-timeinformation on nearby perturbations in a non-invasive manner. In thiscontext, the development of 3D-printed structures that can functionas both sensors and cell culture platforms emerges as a promisingstrategy, not only for mimicking a specific cell niche but also towardidentifying its characteristic physicochemical conditions, such asconcentration gradients. We present herein a 3D cancer model thatincorporates a hydrogel-based scaffold containing gold nanorods. Inaddition to sustaining cell growth, the printed nanocomposite inksdisplay the ability to uncover drug diffusion profiles by surface-enhancedRaman scattering, with high spatiotemporal resolution. We additionallydemonstrate that the acquired information could pave the way to designingnovel strategies for drug discovery in cancer therapy, through correlationof drug diffusion with cell death. |
