| Abstract | In this talk, I will argue, contrary to Cheng (1991, 1994), for the ability of subject wh-phrases in Mandarin Chinese to act as existential polarity items. Empirically, I will show that existential subject wh-phrases may occur in affective contexts like yes-no questions, conditionals, etc. Theoretically, I will point out that existential polarity wh-phrases in subject position are quantified by the existential quantifier due to existential closure (-closure) applied within the IP domain. I will also propose that polarity wh-phrases require a trigger which c-commands them in overt syntax. Finally, I will bring up an open question as to why A-not-A questions |
