| Abstract | Collaborative online publishing is fast becoming an accepted educational tool (Wang et al., 2005). While many teachers expect their students to use wikipedia as a rapid research medium, other instructors are creating their own wikis as homework depositories, messaging systems, and text disseminators (Magnus, 2006). However, mainstream wikis operate on an open source model which may be at odds with the culture of the academy. This paper identifies the character-istics of learners who are likely to benefit from the use of academic wikis, as well as the rule sys-tems which may encourage all students to use academic wikis. While some internally motivated learners may benefit from an academic wiki following the open source model, an incentives based system will recruit more student attention and elicit more contributions. |
