| Abstract | High-Performance Network Protocols and Architectures by Marcos de Macedo Val'erio This dissertation investigates novel protocols and architectures for highspeed networks. We are primarily interested in ring networks, in particular the QuickRing network. The main characteristics of the QuickRing network are explained in detail, especially the buffer reservation mechanism and the routing scheme for multi-ring topologies. A topology discovery algorithm is proposed for QuickRing that can be readily modified to work with any ring network. The integrated circuit that implements QuickRing, called QR0001, is produced by National Semiconductor. Several new methods of scheduling broadcast and multicast communication in a network that has only a unicast primitive are presented. All of these methods avoid buffer overflow at the receivers by ensuring that a node receives only one packet per time-slot. One of the methods for scheduling broadcast communication is based on a new mathematical concept:... |
