| Abstract | It is proposed to obtain and refurbish five to six iron/steel highway bridges for use as pedestrian bridges on the UMass – Amherst campus. The bridges will be restored/refurbished by students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and reconstructed at selected locations on the campus. The Project will: 1) provide students with an opportunity to obtain hands on design and construction experience; 2) provide students with an understanding of the History and Heritage of Civil and Environmental Engineering; 3) provide valuable historic preservation of early iron/steel bridge structures; 3) enhance the campus; 4) provide a format for university engineering outreach to K-12 students to learn more about engineering; 5) provide permanent structures for use as teaching aids in the CEE undergraduate and graduate curricula. The Project was conceived by the author in 1997 and has been developing slowly since then. Details of the Project are described in this proposal. |
